MOORS AND CHRISTIANS

This was a commission I received from Time magazine.

"Moors and Christians" (Moros y Cristianos) is a festival celebrated in the southeastern part of Spain. It commemorates the battles between Christians and Muslims that took place from the 8th to the 15th century.

This tradition has a strong theatrical component and has evolved and adapted over time. Participants dress as either Moors or Christians, and the festivities include parades, shows, and horse competitions.

The images presented here were captured in a quaint village named Mojácar. The entire village dedicates a year to preparing for this event. It's a moment when present-day political and cultural differences fade away, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in a shared, staged fantasy.
